Why Unmarked Was Created: A Journey Towards Timeless, Premium Clothing
Why is it so hard to find premium, simple clothing that just works? That question stayed with me for years. I wanted clothing that exudes quality without big logos or patterns I couldn't wear daily - and when I couldn’t find it, I decided to create it. That’s how Unmarked was born.
The Inspiration Behind the Idea
Creating Unmarked was an easy decision for me. Every time I went shopping for clothes, I was left disappointed by the options available. The logos were often oversized, the colors too loud, or the patterns unsuitable for everyday wear. That’s when I decided to create a wardrobe where every piece could be worn every day by any man - pieces that are not only versatile but also timeless, never going out of fashion.
When it came to premium quality, the prices were often unjustifiably high. I wanted to simplify the shopping experience for men by offering premium-quality clothes that are not just stylish but practical - pieces you’ll actually wear, ones that don’t end up collecting dust in your wardrobe. Timeless style that stays relevant no matter the trends.
On top of that, many big brands show little regard for the environment. They typically rely on manufacturing in developing countries, involving long shipping distances and poor treatment of workers. We believe that’s unfair.
This is where Unmarked’s values were born: Simplicity, authenticity, craftsmanship, and transparency.
The Journey to Starting Unmarked
I vividly remember the moment I decided to start Unmarked. It was during the final months of medical school, a time when most students were starting to relax before entering the workforce. Meanwhile, I was deep into researching materials, suppliers, and fabrics.
Finding manufacturers is one thing, but vetting and comparing them is another. Manufacturers aren’t easily found on Google - though it’s a good starting point. The best ones, however, tend to remain off the radar. I began my search locally in the UK and had a meeting with one of the manufacturers there. That’s when I hit my first obstacle: they quoted £35 per t-shirt in manufacturing costs, not including the fabric.
Determined to make the brand accessible to the majority of men, I looked further afield and decided on Portugal. Known for its premium fabrics and ethical manufacturing processes, it was an obvious choice. I spent months communicating with numerous manufacturers to understand what they could offer and whether they would be a good fit for Unmarked. After narrowing it down, we were left with just one supplier - the one we still work with today.
Not only do they produce the fabric in-house, ensuring full traceability, but they are a smaller production unit, meaning they focus more closely on each garment and pay attention to the details.
Throughout this journey, I read countless articles, books, blogs, and websites about starting a clothing brand. With no fashion background (as a medically trained professional), I had to learn everything from scratch. I took advice from some and ignored others.
We’re only at the beginning, and there’s a long road ahead, but the mission is simple: to produce premium men’s clothing with timeless style that outlasts seasons - clothes we can wear every day, year after year.
What Unmarked Stands For
Our brand ethos is simple but deeply rooted in everything we do: simplicity, authenticity, craftsmanship, and transparency. We believe in letting the clothes speak for themselves - not the logo. That’s why our designs are free from logos, fancy patterns, and odd skinny fits. Instead, we focus on premium-quality, well-fitting clothes that stand the test of time.
By creating timeless wardrobe essentials, we outlast fleeting trends and seasons. Our approach allows customers to build a collection of versatile pieces they’ll actually wear, without having to sift through options they never will. It’s all about making the shopping experience effortless and offering clothes that are easy to wear - day in, day out, year after year.
We’re also deeply committed to reducing our environmental impact. From carefully selecting ethical manufacturers to using sustainable materials and thoughtful packaging, every decision is made with the planet in mind. By producing high-quality garments built to last, we reduce the need for frequent replacements, which helps lower the overall environmental footprint.

Challenges and Lessons Learned
Before I even produced my first sample, there were people around me doubting my ability. My background as a doctor probably presented the biggest hurdle. Starting a clothing brand as a doctor is practically unheard of in the medical profession. But why couldn’t I do it? There are many transferable skills required to start a brand that I had already developed in medicine.
Being true to my values - and the values of Unmarked - is what sets us apart. As a doctor, I am guided by a code of professionalism and commitment, rooted in the Hippocratic Oath. These principles inspired me to create a community and culture at Unmarked that embodies the same ethos: integrity, dedication, and purpose.
This journey will undoubtedly have its ups and downs, but it’s about learning from every situation and embracing opportunities as they arise. Sometimes, you have to learn as you go - a lesson I’ve carried over from my medical training. In medicine, you learn something new every day, and entrepreneurship is no different.
Just the Beginning
